Location and Access (Yukon Map)

Dechenla wilderness resort sits near the Yukon-NWT border, about 200km from Norman Wells to the northeast and 240km from Ross River to the Southwest. It is at coordinates 63 24’39” (latitude) and 129 36’50” (longitude), for those that wish to find us through Google Earth.

This is a vast sub-arctic mountain wilderness – to the west the rugged Selwyn Mountains, and to the east a series of ranges that belong to the McKenzie Mountains. Three major rivers drain the high elevation plateau on which sits Dechenla – the Tsichu, the Intga, the Caribou Cry - all find their way to the Keele (Gravel) River and eventually to the McKenzie River that drains into the Arctic Ocean.

The Canol Heritage Trail, formerly the Canol road, bisects this wilderness, winding its way through the McKenzie Mountains from McMillan Pass at the border of the Yukon and the NWT to Norman Wells on the McKenzie River.

Summer road access is possible to McMillan Pass (Yukon-NWT border) along the North Canol Road through the Yukon. Two airstrips are near to Dechenla wilderness resort, one at Mile 222 16km from the lodge, the other near McMillan Pass, some 50 km from the lodge – both support air charter service, from Whitehorse or Norman Wells.
